Cyberbullying and Academic Performance Correlation

Abstract

Cyberbullying has emerged as a pervasive challenge in educational settings, with increasing evidence suggesting significant negative correlations with academic performance. This manuscript examines the multifaceted relationship between cyberbullying victimization and academic outcomes among school-aged populations. Through systematic review of peer-reviewed literature, we explore mechanisms linking cyberbullying to reduced academic achievement, including psychological distress, cognitive disruption, school avoidance, and diminished motivation. Findings indicate that cyberbullying victimization correlates with lower grades, reduced engagement, increased absenteeism, and higher dropout rates. Moderating factors including social support, self-esteem, coping mechanisms, and school climate substantially influence the severity of academic impact. Gender and demographic differences in cyberbullying prevalence and academic consequences are examined. The manuscript concludes that comprehensive school-based interventions combining cyberbullying prevention with academic support, coupled with systemic changes to school climate and digital citizenship education, represent essential components of evidence-based responses. Future research must address longitudinal causality, intersectionality of victimization, and effectiveness of emerging intervention technologies.
